Kees takes ‘stress away’ at Central Bank fete

Friday, February 10, 2012
Kes the Band and dancers go through their paces.

Lower St Vincent Street in Port-of-Spain was transformed into a party zone last Saturday as the Central Bank of Trinidad & Tobago held its annual Carnival all-inclusive fete.
From 5 pm, partygoers filtered into the venue to what is arguably one of the best parties during the Carnival season. The live entertainment began just before 7 pm, with former Roy Cape All Stars frontline singer Olatunji Yearwood. For this season he has joined forces with musical band Rhapsody…The Next Generation.
With the aggregation comprising a mixture of pan and modern technology, the performance was the best I have seen this Carnival season thus far. It won’t be long before the use of the Percussive Harmonic instruments (PHI) makes it way into mainstream steelbands, if only for its unlimited diversity.
Olatunji who has a hit entitled Call Meh, conducted his performance like a conductor and a music teacher. While entertaining, he was informing the masses of the functions, origin and benefits of the PHI.
What seemed like a curse for the extremely energetic singer when he was sacked, may just be the start of a revolution in soca performances.
Booths offering mango, portugal, apple and pineapple chow, stew horse, pig and chicken, premium bars, shot bar, Chinese, Indian, and Arabian foods & delicacies, cocktails, chocolate fountain and a bmobile VIP Lounge area overlooking the main party zone, were just a few of the treats that were available for those who waited for the next live performance.
If you thought Kees Dieffenthaller was going to easily give up his Groovy Soca Monarch tile, then you would have to think again.

The singer is bent on regaining his title on Fantastic Friday and even collaborated with famous USA West coast rapper, Snoop Dogg with the song, Stress Away, and have created quite a buzz since the release on February 1.
During his performance, Kees asked the crowd if they wanted him to bring Snoop Dogg for Fantastic Friday. Based on the response, it seems as though another international celebrity may be gracing the stages of T&T once again for the world’s biggest soca event.
Just after Kees’ performance, his main rival for Fantastic Friday was warming up backstage. Machel Montano HD didn’t disappoint during his performance. Although he had to rush his set because of a late start, there were no signs of disapproval from the crowd.
Machel would be competing in both the Play Whe Groovy Soca Monarch and the Digicel Power Soca Monarch finals on Friday 17. He will be defending the latter category with the song, Pump Yuh Flag.
